At the centre of Copenhagen, on one of the city’s oldest squares, lies Nikolaj Kunsthal, since 1981 functioning as the city’s art centre. In a unique historical setting, Nikolaj Kunsthal continuously presents new contemporary art – usually site-specific and with a local angle or a special relationship to the city’s vibrant art scene. The art centre is also a meeting place – both for the city’s art and culture-interested citizens and Copenhagen’s art professional environments.
The art centre is located at the old St. Nicolas Church, dating back to the 13th century. The history of the house involves, among other things, sermons by reformer and bishop Hans Tausen in the 16th century; and in the early 1960s some of the first international Fluxus performances took place in the building.
The venue’s striking architecture interacts beautifully with a changing programme of exhibitions, most recently featuring artists such as Kathrine Ærtebjerg, Shane Brox, Mikkel Carl, Ditte Ejlerskov and Nikoline Liv Andersen. Nikolaj Kunsthal is dedicated to Copenhagen’s contemporary art scene and to creating encounters between art forms across genres, media and formats. The art centre also hosts an ongoing programme of concerts, performances, dinners and talks – and not least Platform, an exhibition space that for years has showcased collaborations between emerging artists and curators.
