The Lapidarium of Kings

Under the rustic vaults of this former brewhouse, 384 stone and plaster sculptures from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century stand assembled. They have all been collected from royal gardens, squares and palaces. Here they have reflected the glory of the Danish Crown until the ravages of time threatened to obliterate them altogether. They are a motley collection, including kings on horseback, busts of royal rulers, Greek goddesses, mythical heroes and ornaments that used to adorn palace façades. 
 
In 2013, all of these royal sculptures moved in together in the Lapidarium of Kings in Christian IV’s Brewhouse. Prior to this, they were hidden away in storerooms around the country, out of sight and out of reach. Now, they can be admired and studied by all, allowing visitors to get close to the king’s statues and sculptures – or plaster casts of them.
