Located in the heart of Copenhagen, next to City Hall Square, Vartov is a cultural centre housed in a 300-year-old building that feels like a hidden oasis just off Regnbuepladsen. The building brings together a wide range of functions: a library, meeting rooms, a dormitory, a kindergarten, a church, a late-summer festival, and a vibrant cultural centre hosting events throughout the year — and much more besides.
The history of the house is closely connected to the poet, politician, and pastor N.F.S. Grundtvig, who served as a priest at Vartov Church for 33 years. Life at Vartov continues to build on Grundtvig’s ideas of freedom, spirit, and community. Throughout the year, the house is filled with events reflecting on the time we live in, the past behind us, and the future ahead. These themes unfold through community singing, debates, lectures, communal dining, and much more.
Vartov is owned by the association Grundtvig’s Forum, which has members and activities across Denmark. At the heart of it all is an interest in N.F.S. Grundtvig’s ideas — and a curiosity about how his thinking can be used today.
Everyone is welcome to take part. Vartov’s courtyard is open every day, all year round, and the Cultural Centre and library host events several times a week.
