NIKOLAJ KUNSTHAL
Visit Nikolaj Kunsthal to explore Danish and international contemporary art in unique historical surroundings. The art centre is located in a former church, the Church of Saint Nicholas, dating back to the thirteenth century. Here, beautiful architecture enters into interplay with innovative and engaging contemporary art. Exhibitions change regularly, so there is always something news to see at Nikolaj Kunsthal.
The church was built in the 13th century close to the city’s harbor and named after Saint Nicholas, the saint of sailors. The building has always had a central role as one of Copenhagen’s most important religious and cultural meeting points as a church, library, museum and art gallery. The building officially became an art gallery in 1981, and the exhibition program has included artists such as David Lynch, Ditte Ejlerskov, Henrik Vibskov, HuskMitNavn, Leonard Cohen, Nikoline Liv Andersen, Superflex and more.
